Design Trends: Industrial

The ‘Industrial’ interior design trend first became popular in the 1970’s. It is particularly noticeable within urban areas. Aspects such as bespoke brick and metalwork would be used to make conscious design choices and incorporated into the interior’s overall look.

The industrial look is popular within urban pubs and bars. Notably those with a younger target market such as craft beer bars. You may notice exposed metal bars or rustic-looking beer barrels that have been repurposed as a table.

While you can incorporate other trends such as vintage furniture to create the ideal industrial look there are some other design staples you may want to consider.

How to Create an Industrial-Style Venue

Natural Colour Schemes

Natural colours such as browns, blacks, reds, and greys are noticeable within industrial styles. This interior trend tends to be darker than many others and often gives venues a ‘moody’ appearance.

The natural colours allow other aspects such as your unique exposed brick, scaffold pipes or chunky, rustic furniture to be the focal point and capture the eye of your visitors.

Natural Materials

As well as natural colours there is a focus on natural materials. Chunky woods with dark stains, metals and brick. These materials can be easily incorporated by investing in chunky wooden furniture with black metal frames.  Hospitality sectors may also consider using comfortable leather seating. This can help to warm up your environment while adding another element of texture.

However, you could also consider using these materials in feature pieces such as an exposed brick wall or scaffold pipes along your ceiling or bar area.

Natural materials help reinforce that ‘effortless’ and somewhat rustic look that the urban, industrial style calls for.

Invest in Mood Lighting

As mentioned previously, the ‘industrial’ trend can often be quite dark. You can contrast this and make an atmospheric venue by providing mood lighting. To coincide with the industrial theme, you may want to consider having ceiling lights with exposed black wires. you may also consider large vintage-style light bulbs to make more of a statement. These bulbs tend to be warm toned making them ideal for atmospheric lighting.

Upcycled and Vintage Furniture Decorations

Upcycled and vintage decoration is a great way of making your venue stand out while adding to the urban charm that the industrial look gives.

Woodberry’s Furniture Recommendations

Here at Woodberry, we offer a range of chunky wood and wood effect furniture ideal for settings with an industrial feel.

In particular, our Gabion and Discovery ranges. These are made with wood effect high-pressure laminate tops that are low maintenance and incredibly durable. The contrast of the chunky black powder-coated bases adds to the industrial look. The Gabion tables are particularly popular for their unique galvanized steel cage bases. The cage effect is common within the industrial trend. These can also be filled with items of your choosing to make the products suit your individual tastes.
